Training

The Training platform offers simulated operational environments for use in the training of information sharing and in familiarisation with the operation and management of IORIS. The Training platform mirrors the Operational platform in all respects even using the same data feeds for mapping. Training has been conducted in East Africa, Asia, Southeast Asia, the Pacific and South America. They are delivered by a pool of certified instructors, and ensure a smooth deployment of the platform itself.

A full training package is available, including user guide, training curricula, and training videos, at no cost to beneficiary countries.

The following training courses are available:

  • MARCO3+ Fundamentals
  • Duration: 1 week
This course is designed for junior maritime operators and analysts. It provides essential skills to support managers in strengthening cooperation and coordination between agencies. Participants will learn how to communicate effectively, follow established procedures, and analyse information to support operations at sea, in coastal areas, and on inland waterways. The course also covers maritime safety, security, and sustainable fisheries.
  • Outcome: Participants gain key Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) skills to help identify and report suspicious vessel behaviour.
  • MARCO3+ Leadership
  • Duration: 1 week
This course targets senior operators and managers working in maritime agencies. It focuses on improving interagency cooperation and coordination through better communication, procedures, and information sharing. Like the Fundamentals course, it supports maritime operations in different environments and addresses broader safety and security challenges. A “train-the-trainer” module may be included to help expand IORIS use at the national level.
  • Outcome: Leaders are better equipped to coordinate maritime operations and promote collaboration across agencies.
  • IORIS LITE
  • Duration: 4 hours (online)
This introductory course is designed for policymakers, practitioners, merchant mariners, and junior operators or analysts who need a basic understanding of the IORIS platform. It allows participants to familiarise themselves with core features and interact with others using the LITE version of IORIS.
  • Participants will not receive access to the full IORIS Version 4. For full access, they must complete the MARCO3+ Fundamentals course.
  • Outcome: Users can access and use essential IORIS functions such as messaging, viewing AIS data, and plotting markers — ideal for those who do not require advanced training.
  • IORIS Refresher Course
  • Duration: 2 days (online)
This course is intended for users who have previously completed IORIS training. It provides a quick and practical update on the platform’s basic features to ensure users can confidently continue to operate the system in their daily work.
  • Outcome: The course helps maintain up-to-date IORIS skills and supports consistent, effective use of the platform.
  • Standard Operating Procedures
